The theatre (uri) - Tell playhouse Altdorf
The theatre(uri) Tell playhouse Altdorf dates back to around 1865 and served as town hall until 1924. In 1925, it was enlarged to the actual size of the Tell playhouse Altdorf.
Initially, the performance of the play "Wilhelm Tell" by Friedrich Schiller was top priority. It was successfully staged in a cycle of 2 to 4 years, most of the time to a full house. Now and then, the Tell play and theatre society organised other cultural events, since they owned the building. Thus, the Tell playhouse became the venue for guest performances, for local clubs, as well as gathering place for economic and military associations. These public functions still enjoy today the right of hospitality in the wonderful classicistic theatre hall, in the hall of Uri, and in the other above-mentioned halls.
The theater(uri) Tellspielhaus Altdorf opens towards the main square in Altdorf - the Lehnplatz - and invites the visitor to manifold, attractive events. It is the historic place of cultural interest not only for the canton of Uri, but all over Central Switzerland.
