Kirchenschatz Silenen
The tresury of the Church Silenen consists of valuable objects with three main foci: ecclesiastical cult objects, paintings and vestments. Situated nearby is the tower of Silenen, the old Sust (goods reloading point) and the Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
Silenen was mentioned in a document for the very first time in 857. The manors located between Silenen and Göschenen mainly be-longed to the convent Fraumünster in Zurich at that time. In 1623, the detachment of Göschenen and Wassen took place.
Silenen played a key role in the history of Christianity as far as Central Switzerland is concerned. In 1966, at the occasion of archaeological excavations, the remains of some walls of a Romanesque place of worship dating back to the 7th century came to light. Worth seeing are the richly ornated baroque church with the high altar by the artist family Jodok Ritz from Sekingen as well as the ceiling frescos by the South German master craftsman Ignaz Weiss. Furthermore, the chapels St Anton in the Dägerlohn quarter and the chapel St Ursula (alo called the “Ellbogenkapelle“).
