Open air museum stone quarry Antonini Wassen
The abandoned stone quarry Antonini above the train station of Wassen is of high historical value and lies directly on the Gottardo hiking track. It is a unique witness to the heyday of the Uri stone quarries and flourished with the construction of the Gotthard train line. Many stone quarries have been long overgrown; the Wassen one is the only one left and was opened on 24th June 2012.
A Rizal bust was inaugurated on the square in front of the open air museum in summer 2014. Dr José Rizal was a Philippine freedom fighter who fought for independence. He is still admired by Philippines today. The original monument can be found in Manila, Philippines and had been designed and manufactured by Richard Kissling (Tell monument) in Uri and then placed on a granite footing in Wassen and shipped to the Philippines.
Highlight along the Gottardo hiking track
There is something for everyone, be it lovers of train tracks, families, schools, groups and tourists. The attractions are the meeting place, family BBQ area, biotope, exhibition in the work shed, compress house, crusher, nine information boards showing the life and craft of the stone masons. Also impressive are the viewing platform and backdrop of the Gottardo hiking track! The Gotthard region as a paradise for train and hiking enthusiasts has a new, attractive centre point.
