Bielen Saw Mill, Unterschächen
This impressive historic sawmill, dating back to the year 1850, is located in Unterschächen on the road to the Klausen pass.
The sawmill, which has been restored in 1991 and since then is driven by a water wheel, rotates next to the roaring Schächen river at the entrance to the Brunni valley amidst a picturesque mountain scenery. The restauration made it possible again that thick tree trunks can be sawed up. The exhibition of some old woodworking tools is also very interesting, as is the historic fountain from the year 1870. It was manufactured by an Italian stonemason out of one single chunk of granite.
Highlight
In front of the sawmill there is an idyllic picnic area with a covered campfire site. This sight is a popular destination for outings with families, clubs, companies, schools, class reunions, gatherings for aperitifs and barbecue parties.
