Alpine cabin museum from 1850, Unterschächen-Oberalp
The alpine cabin is situated in the prime cultivated environment of the Schächental valley, at the feet of the towering mountains Clariden and Schärhorn. The impressive natural history hiking track Klausen-Kammli-Oberalp-Aesch (a hiking and hunting reserve including two mountain lakes) passes this alp. The alpine cabin was extensively restored in 2009/2010 and is a culture object of regional importance. The exhibition presents the traditional and well established functioning alpine cheese-making process with a small lounge, smoke kitchen, cheese dairy with the cheese making pot, a well, fireplace, cheese press with weight, mat store as well as precious original exhibits for mountain milk utilisation and alp cultivation from back then.
HIGHLIGHT
The Kempf family has been working the alpine operation for generations. During guided tours by prior request Klaus Kempf, himself the alp farmer, host and initiative of the alp cabin museum tells brilliant stories about cheese making and life in former times. A miniature version of the alpine hut is exhibited at the Swiss Miniature Museum in Melide.
